Precision Underwater Surveying Using Remote Technology

Precision Underwater Surveying Using Remote Technology

In October 2025, the Smart Ships Coalition conducted a demonstration showing how remotely operated technology can transform the monitoring and maintenance of critical underwater infrastructure. A remote-controlled vessel equipped with high-resolution imaging sonar and advanced sensors surveyed sections of the Port of Québec’s dock walls.

Vessels like this can gather real-time data on the structural integrity of walls, wharves, bridges or other installations, and future autonomous capability would allow for even more precision in complex environments. This hybrid approach highlights the safety and efficiency advantages of remote and autonomous vessel operations. Partners for the Summit demonstration included the Port of Québec, Kongsberg Discovery, and Valor Ocean Technologies.
